'The decision to start our pottery venture was unplanned but deeply rooted in our passion for the craft'
A mother-daughter duo accomplished what many dream of—combining their passion with their craft.
Their journey wasn't easy, as success seldom is. After six years of honing their skills in a pottery studio and an additional year working in a ceramic studio in Goa, Ekanshi and her mother started their own studio in Jalandhar.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Nature. My mum and I are die-hard nature lovers, and all the elements we paint are inspired by it.
Nature is an endless source of creativity, offering a rich palette of colors, shapes, and patterns that breathe life into our work.
How do you balance creativity with
practicality in your designs?
Balancing creativity with practicality in our pottery involves making pieces that are both visually appealing and functional.
We start by understanding the purpose of each piece—whether it’s purely decorative or intended to serve a practical function like holding water or serving food. We then research what users need and what is technically feasible.
With this foundation, we let our creativity shine,
experimenting with various shapes, textures, underglazes,
and glazes to explore unique and artistic designs
that express our style.
How do you stay motivated
during slower periods?
Customer appreciation and positive feedback are powerful sources of motivation for us. Knowing that our work is appreciated and positively impacts others inspires us to keep honing our skills, exploring new techniques, and striving for excellence.
Our deep passion for our craft also keeps us motivated during quiet times. We love what we do, and this passion fuels our excitement for creating new pieces, experimenting with different techniques, and continuously improving. We find the meditative quality of working with clay and the beauty of our finished pieces to be a constant source of inspiration.
We've observed that you produce a variety of items,
including ceramic jewellery, mugs, trinket trays, and more.
Could you elaborate on the level of precision needed for each product?
Precision is essential in the production of each piece, ensuring they are not only visually appealing but also functional and durable. We meticulously shape and glaze each piece to achieve precise dimensions and desired aesthetics.
Attention to detail is crucial for achieving the right shapes, sizes, and surface textures. We carefully consider aspects such as rim thickness, form symmetry, and surface finishes to create products that meet our high-quality standards.
What's the dynamic like working
alongside your mother?
A unique and rewarding experience!
3 most crucial elements to thrive
in this profession?
Technique, Creativity and Patience.
What advice do you have for budding ceramic artists?
Be patient and keep trying even if it's hard.
Like any skill, ceramic art requires constant practice.
What are your aspirations for the future?
To continue growing and evolving in my craft.
What obstacles do you encounter as
a small business owner?
Limited financial resources is the major challenge.
Setting up a pottery studio requires specialized equipment and adequate space, which can be costly and hard to find.
Also, balancing creativity with production demands can be tricky. Meeting deadlines while maintaining quality standards requires efficient workflow and
time management.
What does success mean to you?
Feeling fulfilled and content with
my efforts and achievements
